Permanent makeup questions, answered.

These are the questions Rachel hears most at her Petoskey studio. If yours is not here, text her. She is happy to help.

Before your appointment.

Do you offer free consults?

Yes. Consults at Modern Microblading & More are free, and there is no pressure to book. Rachel goes over shape, color and your health history, so bring the brow pencil, liner or lipstick you use now.

How do I prepare for a permanent makeup appointment?

For 48 hours before, skip alcohol, caffeine, retinol and over-the-counter blood thinners like aspirin or fish oil. Never stop a medication your doctor prescribed. Arrive with clean skin and wear your usual brow product so Rachel can see your style.

Do you take deposits?

Yes. A deposit of [deposit amount] is due when you book, and it comes off your total. Deposits are non-refundable, but one can be moved once if you reschedule at least 48 hours ahead.

Can I get microblading before my wedding?

Yes, if you plan ahead. Book your first session at least 10 weeks before the wedding, so there is time for the touch-up at week 6 and four more weeks of healing after it. The planner on this page works out your exact dates.

During your appointment.

Does permanent makeup hurt?

Most clients say it feels like light scratching. Rachel uses a topical numbing cream before and during the session and checks in with you the whole time.

How long does a permanent makeup appointment take?

Plan on 2.5 to 3 hours for a first session. About 45 minutes of that is measuring and drawing the shape, and nothing is tattooed until you approve it.

What is the difference between microblading and powder brows?

Microblading uses a hand tool to draw fine hair strokes and suits normal to dry skin. Powder brows use a machine to build soft shading that looks like brow powder and holds up better on oily skin. Hybrid brows combine strokes at the front with shading through the tail.

While you heal.

What does healing look like after permanent makeup?

For days 1 to 4 the color looks darker than it will end up. Days 5 to 10 bring light flaking, and the color can look patchy before it settles at about week 4.

How long until I can swim in the lake after microblading?

Wait 10 days after each session before swimming in a lake, pool or hot tub. Lake water and chlorine can pull pigment out and raise the risk of infection while the skin heals.

When is the touch-up appointment?

The touch-up is 6 to 10 weeks after your first session, and it is included in the price. It is where Rachel fills any spots that healed light and fine-tunes the shape.

How often will I need a color refresh?

Most clients refresh their permanent makeup color every 12 to 18 months. Sun, oily skin, retinol and exfoliating skincare make color fade faster.

Cost and financing.

How much does microblading cost in Petoskey?

Microblading at Modern Microblading & More in Petoskey is $650. That price includes your touch-up 6 to 10 weeks after the first session.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, through Cherry. Checking your rate is a soft credit check that does not affect your credit score, and you can split the cost into monthly payments.

What forms of payment do you accept?

Cash, check, and credit or debit cards. The balance after your deposit is due at your appointment.

Who should wait.

Can I get permanent makeup while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Rachel does not do permanent makeup during pregnancy. If you are breastfeeding, you will need a note from your doctor saying it is okay before you book.

Can I get microblading after taking Accutane?

Wait until 12 months have passed since your last dose of Accutane. It thins the skin and slows healing, which can blur strokes and cause scarring.

Who is not a good candidate for permanent makeup?

Permanent makeup is not a fit during an active autoimmune flare, if you form keloid scars, or right after a chemical peel or laser on the area. Some medications and health conditions need a conversation first, so text Rachel before you book.

Have a date coming up?

Pick your event and date. We will work back to the latest day to book, your touch-up window and the day you will be fully healed.

Based on 4 weeks to heal, a touch-up 6 to 10 weeks after your first session, and no swimming for 10 days after each session.

What is the occasion?
